Edis Bowden

General Biography

Edis was born in Uganda where his father was a research scientist working for Makerere University and his mother a secretary working in a local medical clinic.  His family returned to England whilst Edis was still a baby and he grew up in Maidenhead, Berkshire and attended the Reading Blue Coats School in Sonning near Reading.  The school proved an excellent platform for Edis to indulge his interest in music and athletics as well as to develop his skills in maths and science in preparation for university.

Edis moved to Scotland 30 years ago when he began his work for BP and has lived in Linlithgow for all of this time. Edis is a keen cyclist and hill walker, enjoying spending time in the beautiful Scottish countryside and cultural history.

Music

Edis has had a passion for music from an early age, beginning with the violin, taking lessons and playing in the school orchestra.  His repertoire has gradually expanded to include other string instruments such as classical and electric guitar, the mandolin, viola and latterly the sitar.

Edis is currently a member of the Bathgate Concert Orchestra and plays second violin in the Chardon Ensemble  Quartet. Edis has also runs a  rock band called The Carbon Pills for his adult pupils and a folk  band called The Velvet Thistle for pupils (and one or two parents!) of any age who rehearse weekly and have been known to play the odd gig at weddings and local clubs and events.

Edis has been awarded the professional qualification The Certificate of Teaching by the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. This entitles him to use the letters CT ABRSM after his name.

Edis has a full Disclosure Scotland certificate.

Maths & Science

Edis has an Honours degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Sheffield. He worked for BP for 20 years as a chemical engineer (applied mathematician).

His aptitude for maths and science became apparent whilst at school and Edis decided to pursue a career combining chemistry and maths. Lately this interest has been expanded to encompass astrophysics, cosmology and quantum mechanics and Edis spends the little spare time has has reading widely on these subjects.

Edis is also a keen amateur inventor and roboticist and enjoys inventing machines for all sorts of tasks around the house and further afield.
